What Is Punjabi Style Food?

Punjabi cuisine is the vibrant, hearty, and agricultural-focused food tradition from the Punjab region that spans the border of India and Pakistan. Globally famous for its robust flavors, Punjabi food includes aromatic stews, fragrant rice dishes, and smoky dishes cooked in traditional tandoor clay ovens. When dairy is used, Punjabi cuisine relies on ghee, yogurt, and paneer versus the milk, cream, and coconut of other regions.

What is Biryani and Haandi?
  • Biryani

(pronounced beer-yah-ni)

Is fragrant basmati rice layered with tender meat and/or vegetables and a special masala (spice) gravy. The dish is then slow-cooked for depth and color. It is typically made for holidays and special occasions, but at Biryani King, every day is a special occasion!

  • Haandi

(pronounced han-di)

Is a deep, wide-mouthed cooking vessel, typically made of clay or copper. It is used for many of the dishes made in homes across Pakistan. The meals made in these pots are collectively referred to as haandis. Often referred to as “curry” in America, haandis are dishes such as butter chicken, nihari, aloo matar gajar, and palak paneer. We choose to use “haandi” because it is what we call these meals at home. At Biryani King, we want to share our authentic culture with our Oahu community.

Do You Have Curry?

Although the term “curry” is often used to describe many dishes in our culture, Curry is a specific dish using curry leaves. Biryani King may feature curry from time to time as a chef special.

Is It Spicy?

Almost all Punjabi dishes feature cumin, chili powder, and salt, then other spices, chilis, and aromatics are added to create the unique flavor of each dish. The heat level varies with each dish, ranging from mild to spicy. Come in, and we will help you pick a dish that is perfect for your palate!
